All leaders in Cub Scouts and Scouting in general must undergo training. Training is also open to parents who wish to assist, even if they are not registered as a leader, and SYT is required for any adult to attend longer events like summer camp. The training provided helps ensure that leaders are prepared to deliver a fun, quality program for youth, and to ensure the safety of everyone involved.
This page covers Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT). For details on other forms of training required or generally available, please see Adult/Leader Training.
Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT) is required for all Scouting America registered volunteers, but is open to all adults. You do not have to be a registered member to take this training. For registered leaders, SYT must be taken periodically to renew your status. If a volunteer’s record is not current at the time of re-charter, the volunteer will not be re-registered.
The National Council is also now requiring that ALL adults attending longer events such as summer camp be SYT certified. Any adult who attends Cub Scout Adventure Camp (CSAC) must complete SYT as a result.
Training focuses on the "three R's" of Youth Protection--Recognize, Respond, Report--and includes concepts and policies around two-deep leadership, the buddy system, privacy, child abuse, and other related topics. Full details regarding policies and procedures can be found on the Scouting America Youth Protection page.
To complete or re-certify your SYT, please follow these instructions:
Go to my.scouting.org and create an account, if you don't already have one. You should receive an email notification with your account information, including a member ID/reference number.
From the my.scouting.org portal, click "My Training" from the tiles or menu list.
The My Training page displays the current status of your SYT, allows you to re-take the course, and also provides a link to print your certificate.
The screens you see may vary slightly as they modify the site or whether you have previously taken the training or not, but some screen shots are provided below for guidance.
If you don't see the ability to start SYT training there, try browsing their course catalog looking for the course titled "Safeguarding Youth" (or something similar).
Complete the entire 90 minute course. Upon completion, you should receive an e-mail with your training certificate, or you may print it from the My Training page.
Send a PDF copy or screenshot of your certificate to your pack committee. They will store your certificate for reference and for turning it in with any adult application or registration for summer camp.
Your training will automatically be updated in the system and associated with the member ID/reference number issued when you created the account.
